About This Item

London: Hulton Press Ltd., 1940. (UK) 1st publication. No markings, the cloth along the front spine edge is rubbed and starting to split, the book has sewn signatures but is rather shaken, a touch of rubbing to cover edges, thus Fair used copy; lacking the dust jacket. Blue cloth, 239pp, B&W photos. Compiled by the photojournalist Stefan Lorant from previous issues of Lilliput magazine,, this small book is a selection of wittily chosen and humourous photographs that provoke thought, or raise a smile. Or both. It’s all about clever, satirical juxtapositions based on observation and the appearance of things. So a bulbous ripe pear is compared to the face of a portly publican, a view of Parisian rooftops are surreally compared to a hat shop display, and kissing film stars are compared to fish. And, hence the title, a portrait of Neville Chamberlain baring his teeth mid-debate is compared to a llama. This book appeared in 1940 when the Brits probably needed a dose of humour: the most interesting parts for us now at the sections dealing withe the was and with Hitler. (1.5 JM HOQ 101/2. 1st. Hardcover. Fair/Lacking the Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".

About JWMah

JWMah has been selling out-of-print, used and rare books on the Internet since 1997. Our stock consists of a good balance of fiction and non-fiction books in a wide range of subjects. We also sell classical Lp records. Our Cookbooks, Canadiana, Travel and Exploration catalogues are worth a look. We examine each book that we sell and try our best to grade the books conservatively. We are strictly an internet business, so usually the books put up for sale are in stock. We try update our books every two days so that our listings are as fresh as possible. It is best to contact us by e-mail or by telephone to reserve a book, as some books sell quickly. We are located in Canada's westcoast and we ship internationally.
