About This Item
London: Rowland Hunter; Hurst & Chance; Ridgeway and Sons, 1829. First edition. Quarto, [5], ii-xiv, xcvi, 324pp. Errata and additional corrigenda slip tipped in as issued. Complete with 48 plates and maps, several folding, and including engraved title dated 1827, with additional vignette and full page illustrations printed in the text. Green patterned cloth with printed spine label mostly worn away, corners bumped and boards rubbed. Some scattered foxing to plates, former owner's bookplate to front pastedown, John Howell San Francisco ticket to rear. A solid, very good copy of this large book.
First edition of this comprehensive work on the origins and practices of the Druids by Godfrey Higgins (1772-1833), English historian and antiquarian. Higgins is also known for his monumental work on syncretism, Anacalypsis.
The Celtic Druids, the author explains, was originally slated to be an octavo (which he began in 1827 but never finished - hence the 1827 title page), gradually grew into an illustrated quarto as more material was added. Higgins also apologizes for the two errata pages and blames the mistakes on a hurried publishing of 7 months time.
An important and copiously illustrated work on the ancient druids..
