About This Item

London: Michael Joseph, 1992. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8" by 5.5". John S. Goodall. A beautifully illustrated first edition copy of Miss Read's fiction novel, centred around life in a Cotswold village. First edition, in the unclipped dustwrapper.Illustrations include decorated paste downs, as well as various in-text illustrations by artist and picture-book artist John Strickland Goodall. 'Celebrations at Thrush Garden' is one of Miss Read's many novels that focus upon the village of Thrush Green. In this book, the village residents plan centenary festivities for their local school as well as a missionary school in Africa. When the anticipated day of festivities arrives, 'events culminate in more than one cause for rejoicing'. Miss Read, otherwise known as Dora Jessie Saint (1913-2012), was a English novelist and schoolmistress. She wrote two series of novels that were based on quaint villages, one being 'Thrush Green', and the other titled 'Fairacre'. Collated, complete.  In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with just a bit of fading around board edges. Dust wrapper is in excellent condition, with just a bit of age-toning to top edge of rear wraps and fly leaves. A bit of wear on rear wraps close to spine edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout. Near Fine

Synopsis

A statue of Thrush Green’s famous son Nathaniel Patten has graced the village green for years, but little is actually known of him among present-day residents until an unexpected letter arrives.
