New York: Horace Liveright, 1928. Hardcover, black spine over purple paper covered boards, in publishers non price-clipped dust-jacket, retaining the original $2.50 price on inside flap. 160 pages. First edition, first issue. A unique copy with Tor House inscription and signature dated January first, 1929 to Edwin A. Elsbach. Elsbach went on to become the Managing Director of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Sensational inscription from Jeffers to Elsbach reads as follows: "How should we caught in the stone of his own person / dare tell the people anything but relative to that? / But if a man could hold in his mind all conditions . at once..." / Inscribed for Edwin A. Elsbach, / with the most cordial good wishes for the new year. / Robinson Jeffers / Tor House, Carmel. / January first, 1929." An exceptional copy with shiny black spine with gilt lettering and purple boards with gilt medallion and lettering bright and fine. Unclipped dust-jacket is complete with some wear to extremities and top of spine, now protected by clear acetate covers. An important and rare inscribed copy of this early title in fine condition with very good+ dust-jacket.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
