Francis de Sales was a 16th-century Catholic bishop from Geneva and was a voice of reason during the unrest caused by the Protestant Reformation. Many of his treaties were highly influential, particularly to those studying Mysticism. He and his writings were popular in both Protestant and Catholic circles, much in part to his works serving as guides to moral living and spiritual devotion, rather than focusing on religious doctrine. In his most famous work 'Devout Life', De Sales states,
"My purpose is to instruct those who live in town, within families, or at court, and are obliged to live an ordinary life as to outward appearances."
'Epistres Spirituels' was one of Sales main treatises on spiritual direction and mysticism.

1873 Hardbound leather with 2 clasps in good working condition. No evidence of previous ownership. Title and decorative art are in Gilt. Moderate wear along the edges, and top & bottom of spine. Back, lower edge of leather is torn. All page edges are in gilt. End papers look like they have been reinforced to the spine with green repair tape. Pages are clean, not torn and the corners are not folded. Sewn-in brown satin ribbon is in very good condition. Place holders for family pictures at the back of the book, which are empty. No ancestral information recorded. Bible is free of names and writing. OVERSIZE. Will require extra postage. Proceeds from the sale of the Bible are donated to our local library. Oxford: Printed at The University Press by John Collingwood & Co 1841 4to unpaginated, 1841 VG+ to Near Fine copy of the large 4to edition, bound in original full burgundy leather, with intricate gilt tooling to front & rear covers & spine, raised bands, all edges gilt. There is slight rubbing to the covers, and the edges are somewhat scuffed, otherwise the binding is in excellent condition. The bookplate of Edgar & Helen Corrie, dated 27th Nov. 1843, is affixed to the front pastedown, and is very attractive in its own right, having hand-stamped gilt lettering & intricate gilt border on a purple background. Internally, apart from some very mild foxing to the prelims, the book is Very Fine throughout, printed in large letter double-column, and appears to be completely unread, with the look and lustre of a brand new book. Obviously, this book has been lovingly cared for by its previous owners throughout the past 150 years, and it is now looking for a new loving home.
