Cloth, VG. xiv+688pp, engraved frontis, partly un-opened, corners a little bumped & rubbed, feint water stain to the frontis, Armorial bookplate ( Campbell ), & ink stamp of the Camberwell & Peckham Working Men's Conservative Club to the half title & title & occasional page of the text. Volume XI of the publishers 'Works of William Makepeace Thackeray', but without an ordinal to the spine. Three short novels & a series of Ballads, as well as The Wolves & the Lamb. Lovel the Widower is a minor work, based upon Thackeray's play The Wolves & the Lamb. Catherine is a a tale of the criminal classes & written so as not to create sympathy. Denis Duval is set in Rye in the late 1700s & 'containing scenes worthy of Thackeray's best days'. [Baker & Packmam]
Synopsis
At that famous period of history, when the seventeenth century (after a deal of quarrelling, king-killing, reforming, republicanising, restoring, re-restoring, play-writing, sermon- writing, Oliver-Cromwellising, Stuartising, and Orangising, to be sure) had sunk into its grave, giving place to the lusty eighteenth; when Mr. Isaac Newton was a tutor of Trinity, and Mr. Joseph Addison Commissioner of Appeals; when the presiding genius that watched over the destinies of the French nation had played out all the best cards in his hand, and his adversaries began to pour in their trumps; when there were two kings in Spain employed perpetually in running away from one another; when there was a queen in England, with such rogues for Ministers as have never been seen, no, not in our own day; and a General, of whom it may be severely argued, whether he was the meanest miser or the greatest hero in the world; when Mrs.

Modern hardbacks are described as being Cloth bound, even though predominantly they come in paper covered boards pressed to look like cloth. Book grades are given book then dustjacket (if any) Running from F - Fine, VG - Very Good, G - Good, P - Poor. A fine book will look almost like the day it was bought, a VG one will have some evidence of prior ownership, G means a nice clean copy, obviously secondhand & P implies a COMPLETE copy that has suffered a hard life & will need some TLC. We take into account the books age when grading, so a 250 year old book graded as VG will look more second hand that a 5 year old book graded the same. On the Net since 1998. All prices are in GBP.
