About This Item
Boston: J. E. Tilton and Company. Fair with no dust jacket; Boards moderately worn, dampstaining at margins . of first and last several pages and to top corners of front and rear . boards.. 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Pebbled blindstamped brown cloth binding with dulled gilt lettering on spine. The minister author provides religious meditations after the death of his nineteen year old daughter. Adams wrote several other books of sermons and about his travels, most notably his 1854 volume, "A South-Side View of Slavery", in which he offers tepid support for slavery because it offered the hope of Christian salvation to otherwise damned Africans. Adams was harshly criticized by abolitionists for this perspective and we think he should have stuck to his travel tales and religious subjects. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages .
