From the introduction: "Alexandre Ksenaforovitch Sementchenkoff was born into a family of Cossack origin; he studied in the reknowned Nicholas Cavalry School in St. Petersburg, and served as an officer in the Leib-Atamanskii Cossack Regiment during the First World War. After the Revolution of October 1917 he emigrated to France and settled in Paris. Soon after his arrival in France he began to collect prints and books relating to Russian history and culture, with a strong interest in his native Cossack lands and armies. He continued all his life, building a collection that was so well-known that it attracted scholars, historians, curators and collectors from the Soviet Union as well as the West. Fine.
