About This Item
Cairo, Egypt: Institute Francais D'Archéologie Orientale. Very Good+. 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+ to Near Fine: shows faint softening to the upper rear corner tip; the text pages show a couple of mild creases (not full-on turned-down creases) at the upper corner; mild rubbing to the cloth of the rear panel; slight cocking to the binding, which remains secure; the text is clean. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing the mildest wear and minor, unobtrusive imperfections. Bright and clean. Close to "As New". NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Large Quarto. Thirty-eight plates, with numerous illustrations to each, some double-page with explanatory text on facing leave. Plus 3 double-page graphs and schedules bound at end. Frontispiece map printed in red & black. Some text figures. Language: English. Weight: Over 100 ounces. Black cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Frontispiece map. Publisher's device on title page. High production values: printed to heavy paper. This may well have been rebound in the present sturdy black cloth over boards. If so, it is certainly a high-quality rebinding job. Hardcover. Offers a complete account of all the Egyptian Scarabs, Scaraboids, Seals and Amulets, in the Palestine Museum up to August, 1934. Details of the arrangement of the text, indices, and plates are given in the Table of Contents. Included is a brief chronology of Aegypto-Canaanite contacts as well as a supplement to the same on coins showing Egyptian influences. Illustrated with in-text symbols and thirty-eight plates rendered lithographically and three graphs showing the total of catalogued objects of each period, the totals of scarabs, scaraboids, seals and amulets classified according to sites and Scarabs according to dynasties. Contains also a list of abbreviations. Alan Jenvey Rowe (1891 1968) was a British archaeologist most famous for his studies on ancient Egypt. Rowe was an Egyptologist and lecturer in Near Eastern Archaeology in Manchester University. Between 1923 and 1925 he took part in a core expedition to Giza. He worked from 1928 to 1931 on the pyramid of Meidum, and surrounding areas, during this time he discovered the first royal necropolis built in a style of a royal court. Between 1952 and 1957 Rowe surveyed and excavated tombs of the Necropolis of Cyrene, in the course of four campaigns. Rowe was the first to make an extensive archaeological study of the Necropolis of Cyrene. Rowe published extensive findings from excavating large parts of the Serapeum of Alexandria in 1956 together with B. R. Rees, including a detailed floor plan. Rowe and Rees 1956 suggested that statues found at the Serapeum of Alexandria and Memphis Saqqara, share a similar theme, such as with Plato's Academy mosaic. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; xlviii, 343 pages .
