About This Item
First printed in Italy,1867 and regarded as a classic in Italian fiction, centered around a gloomy castle in Northern Italy. An English translation of 'Confessions of an Italian', widely considered one of the most important landmarks in Italian literature. This abridged translation by Lovett F. Edwards would stand until 2014,as the only attempt to render it into English.Frequently and commonly found without its attractive dust wrapper. The core of the book revolves around the decay and death of the Italian aristocracy, reflected in the crumbling Castle Fratta and its dramatic inhabitants. The 73rd title since publisher's inception and one of the first hundred titles.
Ericc George Fraser (b. 1902) worked as Eric Fraser.Born Westminster,London, son of a solicitor's clerk and a headmistress. Educated at Westminster City School; while still a pupil there,he attended W.R. Sickert's evening classes at Westminster School of Art.Studied at Goldsmith's College School of Art on a scholarship (1919).Taught lithography at Goldsmith's (1923-24),fashion and figure composition at the Reimann School,Westminster (1938-39),and graphic design at Camberwell School of Art (1928-40).He has been active in many fields including b/w illustration, etching, lithography, mural and easel painting, and stained glass design.Perhaps best known as a graphic artist,he has illustrated books for many publishers (including the Golden Cockerel Press and the Folio Society),and made drawings for magazines (including the Radio Times since 1926) and advertisements (for British Rail, the General Post Office,Shell and the Ministry of Information - as many were once - amongst others). He works mainly in black ink, with white overlaid to give something of the quality and definition of a wood engraving. His book and advertising illustrations exemplify his capable draughtsmanship and ability to create striking and memorable images.
The Folio Society's formula for success is publishing books with exceptional typography, illustrations, paper and bindings. The Society sources new introductions from literary experts to accompany classic texts, and uses skilled designers and master printers to produce memorable fine books.Fiction and non-fiction titles are published. Fiction and non-fiction titles are published. The Folio Society also prides itself on producing series of an author's works which regular publishers might not think economic - in several cases it is only possible to acquire forgotten books by major writers in Folio Society editions.
