About This Item

Regensburg: H. Lentz and H.G. Neubauer. unbound. Botanical. Color mezzotint with hand coloring. Page measures 15.75" x 9.78".

Stunning depiction of the branch of a clove tree. Cloves are the aromatic flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae, Syzygium aromaticum. They are native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, and used as a spice, flavoring, or fragrance. Prior to the 17th century, cloves could not be found anywhere else. Both accurate and beautiful, these prints were the first botanical color mezzotints, a revolutionary method that allowed for subtlety and detail. Weinmann (1683-1741) was a renowned pharmacist whose plant studies earned him scientific acclaim among botanists. He employed several botanical artists and engravers to assist with the project including Seuter, Johann Ridinger, Johann Jakob Haid and most notably Georg Dionysus Ehret. This is a wonderful example of color mezzotinting.
