New York: Sarony, circa 1870. Original document. Fine. Three-quarter-length sepiatione image of Tilton in velvet-collared jacket, white collar, and foppish bow tie, his right hand inside his jacket front. Gilt-stamped below the image is "Sarony, 680 B'Way." On the black verso is pencilled "Theo Tilton" [not an authentic signature].
Tilton (1835-1907) promoted the cause of abolition and the northern Loyalists, drew praise from Frederick Douglas who called him an eloquent speaker and brilliant writer, &c.
