About This Item
Cambridge, UK: Science History Publications Cambridge, 2003. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. First printing. Glossy illustrated hardcovers. Generally fine, very slight rubbing to the boards. Issued without dust jacket. Scarce. Caroline Hreschel became , in 1787, the first female professional in the history of astronimy when George III conferred on her a salary of fifty pounds for her work in assisting his astronomer, her brother William. She worked with him for years, sitting nearby, writing as he shouted out his observations. But after William married a rich widow, Caroline found herself displaced. In her seventies, she complied an autobiography that detailed her life to the time of her brother's marriage and then, in her nineties, she embarked on another autobiography, telling her story to the middle of her bath years.
