About This Item
Printed for John Starkey, at the Myter betwixt the Middle-Temple-Gate, and Temple Bar in Fleet Street, 1670. Hardcover. Good. Contemporary full calf, 12" x 7.5", copper engraved frontispiece portrait of Pope Clement IX, (8), 330 pp. + 2 pp. ads. Worn at edges and spine, wormholes to foot of spine but not to pages. Ownership inscription of Cardinal Roger Mahony who was the powerful archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985-2011. Mahony oversaw the construction of the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and was heavily involved in helping migrants and immigrants. His legacy remains in question since he also tried to deal with the accusations of sexual abuse that were running rampant in the Catholic Church at the time. He came into the archdiocese by helping institute a zero-tolerance policy; yet during his tenure there were redactions, delays, and other tactics which, in his mind might have helped the church move forward, but which from victims' point of view are cover-ups and therefore outside of the zero-tolerance policy he himself instituted. "In gratitude to our Loving God for the incredible privilege of being created a Cardinal Priest on 28 June 1991 by Pope John Paul II, and in participating in the Conclave of Cardinals which elected Pope Benedict XVI on 19 April 2005, Processing into the Sistine Chapel while the Litany of the Saints was being chanted remains the most memorable day of my entire life." Dated August, 2010, while he was in the middle of transitioning to retirement. Ironically, this history of Cardinals, was on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, as Leti is "mendacious and inexact" according to the Catholic Encyclopedia.
