Albany: S.R. Gray, 1865. First Edition. Cloth. Fine. The scarce 1865 first edition of The Capture, The Prison Pen and the Escape by Willard W. Glazier. Octavo, 343pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine. Frontispiece portrait with tissue cover. Complete with six full-page illustrations of prison life. (Dornbusch I: N-84) (Nevins I: 192) No record of this first edition can be found on the market. A few copies from 1865 are held in special collections. The 1866 edition is found in Sabin, published by J. Munsell of Albany, NY. (Sabin 27558). The emotional account by Captain Willard Glazier of prison life in the Confederacy and their attempts to escape to the north. The book is based on a diary but was "dressed up" for postwar propaganda purposes. Other works by Willard Glazier include: Down the Great River, Heroes of Three Wars, Headwaters of the Mississippi, Three Years in the Federal Cavalry and Ocean to Ocean on Horseback.
