About This Item
Important manifesto concerning the deposition of Alvear's Directory, and the reason of his exile.
A scarce document with great importance, particularly because of its second part, the note by José Gervasio Artigas (1764-1850) "the father of Uruguayan nationhood", in which he details the reasons for Alvear leaving Argentina.
Carlos María de Alvear (1789-1852) participated in the Argentine War of Independence, and in January 1815 he became the Supreme Director of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. Due to the lack of any support he had to resigned on April 15, 1815 and leave the country. In his note, Artigas points out that it was rather the members of the former Argentinian government than he who had promoted the discord leading to Alvear's exile.
Between 1811 and 1815, Artigas led Uruguay's early efforts to attain independence from Spanish and Portuguese rule and eventually became that nation's first native-born governor. However, his authority was later undermined by intrigues fomented in nearby Buenos Aires and within his own followers, and he was forced to seek exile in nearby Paraguay in 1820. He took no part in the ultimate achievement of independence for his native country (1828) and refused to become, in his twilight years, a figurehead in the civil wars that ensued.
First part signed by Francisco Antonio de Escalada (1749-1835), who briefly served as the head of the government until Ignacio Álvarez Thomas (1787-1857) became interim Supreme Director on 20 April 1815.
