Volume II ONLY, sixteenmo size, 375 pp. The second volume only of this 1814 publication of Captain James Cook's (1728-1779) voyages in the Pacific Ocean, during the mid- to late eighteenth century. This volume is an account of Cook's encounters with the coasts of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, as well as his death after his failed attempt to kidnap the ruling chief of the Hawaii, Kalani' pu'u.

___DESCRIPTION: Full brown marbled leather, five gilt rules and red leather spine label with gilt lettering on the spine, frontispiece a copperplate engraving captioned "The Death of Captain Cook."; sixteenmo size (5.75" by 3.5"), pagination: [1-5] 6-375. Volume II ONLY.

___CONDITION: Volume is good only; boards are clean overall with slight soiling, some rubbing to the edges of the boards and to the corners, some loss of the leather at the tail of the spine, some cracking along the front joint and front hinge is loose, and the rear free endpaper is missing; the text block is still strong, interior pages are toned with light foxing throughout, and there is a prior owner name written in pen on both the front flyleaf and first page of the table of contents. Overall a solid reading copy, with the binding intact if somewhat fragile.
