Illustrated with ship identification charts and a map of the English Channel at both front and rear endpapers. 8vo, publisher's original navy blue cloth embossed with stars within a pattern of diamonds in blind to the upper cover and spine panel, American eagle on upper cover in gilt and with gilt lettering to the spine. The dustjacket is from a later issue of the book. 310, 6 ads. pp. A well preserved copy, especially so for Depression era books, the spine and boards slightly soiled, mildly edge-worn. Interior clean, binding tight. Dustjacket moderately edge-worn, a closed tear and creasing on bottom corner of rear panel, rectangle clipped from bottom of rear flap, corners clipped from both flaps. FIRST EDITION BY A MODERN MASTER OF HISTORIC FICTION, renowned for his scrupulous accuracy and unforgettable depiction of past times. CAPTAIN CAUTION is a tale of 1812, when America has declared war on Britain. The American ship Olive Branch is waylaid by a British cruiser; its captain killed, and the crew taken prisoner, including the captain’s pretty and strong-willed daughter, Corunna. Widely recognized for his careful attention to historical details, Roberts portrays the bravery of the seamen, their sufferings in Dartmoor Prison, the invention of the Gangway Pendulum, and the sailors’ dangerous and dramatic escape.
