New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1854. First edition, early issue of the historian's detailed account of the African slave trade without the misprint on page 191. Octavo, bound in contemporary calf, rebacked, additional vignette title. In very good condition, hinges reinforced. American author, lawyer, and historian Brantz Mayer founded the Maryland Historical Society in 1844, which is today the oldest cultural institution in the U.S. state of Maryland. During the American Civil War, Mayer was an active Unionist, and in 1861 was appointed president of the Maryland Union State general committee, and did much to aid the Union cause.
