To please wife Serena, Captain Daniel Dott quits seafaring to be variety store proprietor as a steppng stone becoming a community leader; neither adept at collecting bills nor politics, things are not well. A windful inheritance falls his way; a temporary respite allowing devoted daughter Gertrude, betrothed to medical student John Doane, to continue college. But then cousin Percy Hungerford, who looks "like a picked chicken ... a spindlin' little critter ... but there wasn't any picked chicken look about his clothes," and is the heir to the bulk of the inheritance, comes to town and is smitten with Gertrude. Add to that, ambitious wife Serena sets off on an exhausting political campaign promoting herself ... misunderstandings, mis-communication, lost letters, etc, etc, plays havoc with many a life.
