The Capital of the Tycoon: A Narrative of Three Years' Residence in Japan, in 2 volumes, New York: Bradley, no date (late 18th or early 19th century). Octavos, American edition (first was published in London in 1863), xxvii, 28-407; x, 12-433, beige cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed, some leaves unopened, frontis illustration and illustrations in text. An early occidental account of life in Japan from a British diplomat. The illustrations list here calls for a map "in the front" of both volumes, but there were never any maps in these books. Condition of this set: Spines darkened with a few spots, short tear in pastedown of V1, overall near fine. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 2-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
