Inscribed by Bill Clinton as Attorney General of Arkansas in 1977, the first edition of Capital Punishment: The Inevitability of Caprice and Mistake by Charles L. Black Jr.. Twelvemo, 96pp. Blue illustrated covers. Stated "first edition" on copyright page. Faint shelf wear to covers. Free of notes or marginalia. Includes a printout of an e-mail from 2007, asking Mr. Epes if he knows more about the provenance of this book. Inscribed on the half title: "To Wooten - Thanks for all your help and friendship. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Bill Clinton / Christmas 1977." A unique early signature from the future President, with a unique connection to the Whitewater controversy. Wooten Epes was the agency director of the Arkansas Housing Development Finance Authority, appointed by Governor Bill Clinton in 1983. He was ensnared in the Whitewater Controversy and compelled to testify before congress about political influence and large donations to the Clinton Campaign, in exchange for loan consideration from the Arkansas Housing Authority.
