Ink stamp of the Colonial Office Library to front wrapper and penned number to top of rear wrapper. Printed title on spine. Small loss of paper to head and tail of spine. Edges uncut. Interior is generally clean and tight. Expert repair to small hole in lower right corner of title page and page 3. An attractive publication as issued in paper wraps. Printed by William Clowes and Sons. very good The Parliamentary papers for February 1847, with fascinating content about the Kafir Tribes of South Africa. The colonial governor, P. Maitland expresses his worry that treaties will not prevent the Kafir tribes from entering colonial lands and stealing cattle. Maitland's remedy to the Kafir incursions is to "...overawe them into keeping good faith with the Government for their own sakes," and he Maitland goes on to say "...it is difficult to calculate the movements of a savage and warlike nation, skirting our border, covetous of our property, and to a considerable extent irritated by our endeavors to control their plundering habits." A fascinating insight into colonial Africa with an attractive coloured folding map of the Eastern Frontier of the Cape of Good Hope and part of Kafirland. 1847
