About This Item

IDB Productions, 2017-01-01. MP3 CD. New. In 1869, John embarked on to discover the Colorado and the Grand Canyon. He assembled nine men, four crafts and food for ten months and went from Green River, Wyoming, on May 24. By way of perilous torrents, the team went through the Green River to its convergence with the Colorado River also previously called as the Grand River upriver from the intersection, adjacent to the modern Moab, Utah.

The excursion path voyaged to the Utah canyons of the Colorado River, which John defined in his publicized diary as having spectacular topographies with carved walls, majestic arches, glens, alcove gulches, knolls and headstones. From which of these topographies must they choose a title? They all agreed to name it as Glen Canyon. Paradoxically, today around totally inundated by Lake Powell, at the rear of the Glen Canyon Dam.

A man named Goodman left after the first month and the other three namely Dunn and the Howland brothers departed at Separation Rapid in the third, only two days before the team arrived at the aperture of the Virgin River on August 30 after getting across about 1,500 km. The three who departed the team at the last minute in the expedition were then exterminated, possibly by the Indians.

John Wesley "Wes" Powell was an American soldier, geologist, discoverer of the American West, educator at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural foundations. He is remarkable for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river expedition across the Green and Colorado rivers, such as the first famous route by Europeans in the Grand Canyon.

John became the second director of the United States Geological Survey and suggested, for the advancement of the barren West, rules that were clairvoyant for his exact assessment of situations.
