Hardcover with slipcase box, published by The Nonesuch Press. Classic French satire first published in 1759, the story of Candide, the optimist who eventually becomes disillusioned with society after witnessing and experiencing hardships. Translated by Richard Adlington, illustrations by Sylvain Sauvage - a total of twenty illustrations. 147 pages, 6-3/4" X 10-1/4". Edition is not clearly marked, this is most likely the edition from the late 1940's. Former owner's name written in blue ink at the top corner of the first flyleaf page. No further writing besides that though. Cover boards are flat, the corners are not bumped or creased. Edges of the text block are clean. Some slight sun fading to the blue color of the spine panel, and it's possible that the top edge of the text block has some fading as well. The slipcase box is intact, all corners are intact, there are some dots of edge wear to the open side of the box, a few spots of staining to one of the top panels. Not a library discard. Attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
Synopsis
Candide, ou l'Optimisme (in French) is a French satire written in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: or, Optimism (1947). The novella begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism (or simply optimism) by his tutor, Pangloss.
