Publisher's Note: On August 1, 1925 Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer bought The Modern Library from Boni & Liveright, and the publishing venture that would soon be called Random House was born. The first book ever to be bear the Random House imprint was this edition of Voltaire's CANDIDE, illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Random House marked its fiftieth year with a facsimile edition of CANDIDE, and it is now our pleasure, on the occasion of Random House's seventy-fifth birthday, to bring this beautiful, elegant book to a new generation of readers.
