About This Item

Chicago and New York: Rand McNally, 1890. Hardcover. Good. 169 pp + a lengthy and interesting advertising section (approximately 32 pages). Bound in original brick red cloth with gilt lettering and hunting/fishing insignia and image of a teepee on front board. Boards edgeworn and scuffed, small area of dampstain visible on rear endpapers, abrasion to front free endpaper where a label was removed. Binding sound, text clean. Shields (1846-1925) wrote extensively on sporting topics under the pen-name Coquina before establishing Recreation: A Monthly Magazine Devoted to Everything the Name Implies in 1894. Between 1897 and 1902, he was head of the Campfire Club of America. In this book, he offers practical information on a range of outdoorsy topics, including clothing and personal equipment, bedding and sleeping bags, tents, guns and rifles, fishing tackles, selecting horses and tack, selecting a good guide, food for camping, choosing a campsite, making a campfire, and what to do if you get lost. At the end are three chapters contributed by other authors: Camp Hygiene, Medicine, and Surgery by Dr. Charles Gilbert Davis; Camp Cookery by Col. J. Fry Lawrence; and How to Load a Pack-Horse by Frank F. Frisbee. Among the items advertised at the end: a folding canvas boat, camp bed, fishing tackle, guns, portable houses, outdoor clothing, maps, books, and railroad travel.
