About This Item

Philadelphia: Institute of Contemporary Art, 1965.. One of three different invitations issued for Warhol's first retrospective, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art. By all accounts an outrageous event where Andy and Edie Sedgwick were swarmed like rock stars and Warhol's reputation as one of the most important artists of the period was firmly secured. The invite is printed on an actual Campbell's Soup label that curator Sam Green obtained from Campbell's. Included is a xerox of the letter from Campbell's to Sam Green stating that they sent 350 Tomato Soup labels. Also included is a letter from the executor of Green's estate attesting to the fact that this invitation came from his estate and was designed by him. One crease where folded as issued, else fine. The label, given the small number originally produced and the passage of almost 50 years, is rare. A wonderful item from a key juncture in Warhol's career.
