1863: Lippincott. Hardcover. Fair. 252 pp. First map has 2 tears about 2 inches, otherwise good. Second map missing. Third map has tears with loss. Original cloth torn, worn, and stained, particularly on front cover. Interior ok only, binding nearly broken at pages 68-69. Of note is the inscription on front fly leaf: "Presented by Lt. Col J.B. Leake / to / C.L. Drake 1st Lieut / Co A 20th Iowa / Port Hudson, Miss / July 27th 1863." This was shortly after the Battle of Port Hudson (July 9th) which have Union forces control of the Mississippi River. A few months later Leake was defeated and captured at the Battl of Stirling's Plantation in Louisiana. He was imprisoned at Camp Ford in Tyler Texas, where there is still today a replica of his cabin, which he enjoyed as the highest ranking officer. Professional bookseller for 20 years.
