Crimea, 1855. Salt print from a wet collodion glass negative. 9 inches by 12 1/4 inches. Roger Fenton (1819-1869), arguably the most important British photographer of the 19th century. He founded the Royal Photographic Society in 1853 and was appointed the first official photographer of the British Museum in 1854. Perhaps he is most remembered as the first wartime photographer. In 1855 he was commissioned to document the Crimean War by Manchester publishers Thomas Agnew & Sons. The large plate salt print offered here is one of the images Fenton produced from that war.
