About This Item

New York: Random House,, 1961. First edition, first printing, review copy, with the publisher's review slip loosely inserted. This was the favourite musical of the author's Harvard classmate, President Kennedy. Days following JFK's assassination, Jackie Kennedy made her memorable analogy that his administration was a Camelot by quoting to a reporter the work's closing lines: "Don't let it be forgot, that for one brief, shining moment there was Camelot." Lerner's musical adaptation of the Arthurian novels of T. H. White was first produced at Broadway on 3 December 1960 at the Majestic Theatre. It won four Tony awards and ran for 873 performances until 5 January 1963. Octavo. Original red quarter cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, bluue board sides with gilt lettering, publisher's device, and photographic half-tone from the production, mounted within blind rules, top edge blue, other edges rough-trimmed. Double-page photographic half-tone as frontispiece and title page and 2 half-tone plates. Spine ends bumped, minor fading to board edges, contents clean; jacket unclipped, spine a little rubbed, couple of nicks, remains bright: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
