Illustrator: Various. 1.835 kg.; XIV, 994 pages, last page blank, preface by author, foreword by Nicholas Barker, publisher's note. Pale gray coloured endpapers. The text is illustrated with over 300 black-and-white illustrations across the entire time line of the English language being written. Light blue coloured cloth boards with gilt illustration on the front panel ( Cambridge University Press shield ], with dark gray insert to the backstrip and within that insert gilt titles and there is a smaller gilt shield beneath the titles of the backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper, showing an illustration of Samuel Johnson on the front panel, with white and black titles to the front panel and backstrip. In this book, arranged alphabetically, is the English-speaking world's literature from the sixth-seventh centuries up to present day. Countries included Great Britain and Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the West Indies and "... to all other parts of the English-speaking world which contributed to the great treasure-house of poetry, fiction, drama, philosophy and satire which is one of the lasting achievements of Western civilisation." -- from the front fold over panel blurb.
