Peking: The Camel Bell, 1936. Book. Illus. by tipped-in photos, black/white and color sketches. Near Fine. Cloth. 1st Edition. Oblong 8 Vo. Near fine, original silk embroidered boards with orange silk cord binding in the Chinese style. 16 tipped-in photos, 60 colored plates of peddlers, one paper pattern and one diagram. All fine, with no foxing or stains or browning, on the outer faces of double pages. An important and rare piece of American resident scholarship in China. The author was a Chinese linguist and member of the American military legation from 1923 to at least 1936. He also earned a Masters Degree, with this study of street activity in Peking as his thesis, in 1936. .
