About This Item

Antwerp: Christophorum Plantinum (Christophe Plantin), 1584. Hardcover. Good. The extant literary works of Callimachus in the original greek with a translation into Latin by Bonaventura Vulcanius with annotations and index. Together with the bucolic poetry of Moschus of Syracuse and Bion of Smyrna. Callimachus is perhaps best remembered as a librarian in Alexandria performing the first recorded bibliographic survey but he was an innovative poet, reacting against the epic tradition, his short works are cynical and sensitive and would greatly influence his fellow Alexandrian Cavafy 2000 years later. With decorated initials throughout. 32mo. (120x80mm) [xiv] 272pp with index + 95pp. Full near contemporary leather, recently rebacked with original spine and rear board laid down. Gilt decoration and raised bands to spine. Ex British museum library, sold in their duplicate sale of 1818 with their stamp to rear free endpaper and reverse of title. Published by Plantain, with his device to both sections. Boards bowed but a clean and tight copy.
