About This Item

Patterson: Pageant Books, Inc., 1960. Originally published in 1934, Roth's iconic novel has from the first moment been a critical success. First Edition copies are out of range for most collectors; but this reissue can stand as a good place-holder. This is a Fine copy of the First Edition Thus, including a History by Harold A. Ribalow; a Critical Introduction by Maxwell Geismar; and a Personal Appreciation by Meyer Levin. Light gray cloth binding with a spine label in black and gilt. Clean text; 599 pages. The dustjacket is unclipped (but the price has been crossed out); a bit of darkening of the spine and margins; there is some light chipping along the edges. In an archival plastic protector.. First Thus. Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

Call It Sleep is a 1934 novel by Henry Roth. Time magazine described it as "The story of three years in the life of a sensitive Jewish slum-child, told with painstaking and pain-giving fidelity," in the February 25, 1935 edition. While the book sold poorly upon its initial publication, the book received a second life when it was reviewed by literary critic Irving Howe on the front page of The New York Times Book Review on October 25, 1964, and has since sold over a million copies.
