Clean and illustrated wraps, tight, solid and square binding. Internals As New. The Images of America Series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today, helping to preserve the local heritage. In 1850 Congress appropriated funds to build eight lighthouses on the West Coast and construction began three years later. The first one to become operational was on Alcatraz Island on June 1, 1854. While the other seven were being built Congress authorized funds for a second set of eight. By 1930, California had 40 light stations. This new photographic history contains over 200 rare and beautiful images featuring lighthouses of the South Coast, San Francisco Bay, and the North Coast. This book depicts lighthouse life in a quieter time. 127 pages. 6.5 x 9.25 inches. 2000, Arcadia Publishing, Charleston, South Carolina, USA
