About This Item

Caldwell, Idaho: The Caxton Printers, Ltd, 1935. FIRST EDITION. Green cloth, author and title on front and spine in gilt lettering With frontispiece and 26 photographic illustrations (1 folding). Publisher's cloth, author, title and illustration in gilt on front cover, gilt spine, no dust jacket; interior clean and excellent. First edition of this biography of Moses Embree "California Joe" Milner (1829-1876). Born in Kentucky, he headed west at the age of fourteen, joined the army during the Mexican War in 1846, and with his young bride traveled to California to prospect for gold. He ended up settling in Oregon. Never one to stick around, he served as chief scout for Custer, where he became friends with Wild Bill Hickok. He fought with Kit Carson and was known to many of the famous American "mountain men" of the time. A most colorful character, he was murdered following a quarrel. The book includes an account of Custer's last stand by Col. William H. C. Bowen with an appendix listing casualties of those fighting with Custer and with Reno.
