About This Item
London: Printed by and for G. Smeeton... and Sold by J. Caulfield. 1814. First edition, 8vo, [2], viii, 163, [1]pp., lacks portrait, title printed in red and black, orig. boards, re-backed, new paper spine label, uncut. Caulfield, a printseller by trade, produced many books on the history of engraving. The DNB states that "His knowledge of English history and biography was minute and extensive, while his acquaintance with engraved British portraits was unequalled by any person of his time". An interesting volume, full of snide remarks about publishers, description of portraits, prices, notes on the engravers, etc.
