Londres: Guillaume Pickering, 1835. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 volumes. 12mo. Illustrated with lithographs of the manuscripts, some with initials colored by hand in red and blue. Title page in Volume 1 in both English and French.. Publisher's original cloth in a small sand grain design. This is clearly Winterbottom's Type 'M' (Tomlinson). Krupp (p.30) notes this as San1, but without a Winterbottom cross-reference. She ascribes an appearance date of 1850 for this early design; to find it on books published in 1835 is a treat. That it would appear on a Pickering work should be no surprise. Pickering started experimenting with bookcloth as early as 1823 through his binder, Archibald Leighton, who was responsible for many innovations in the design and use of early bookcloth. The text constitutes mainly the remains of Thomas of Britain's Tristan Romance, composed in the 12th and 13th centuries in Norman French and Greek, here edited and rendered in the originals by Fr. Ownership signature on title of F. P. Wilcken, Lubecensis [Lubeck, Germany]. Very good. Rare. Includes the extensive annotations of scholar Isaac Casaubon, as well as a long dissertation on Suetonius by Boeckler. The elaborate half-title is drawn by I. Schef and engraved by Pierre Aubry (1610-1686). Gaius Suetonius Tranquilius was a Roman historian and biographer, whose most significant contribution was his biographies of 12 Roman rulers, from Julius Caesar to Domitian. Suetonius wrote The Twelve Caesars while serving as the personal secretary of the emperor Hadrian.

Oblong folio. 37 black and white maps and charts showing sections of the propsed and existing sections of the highway through Guatemala to Panama. This is the plate volume only, no text. Printed paper wraps bound with rivets. The item has been folded once vertically with wear and loss to the covers. The maps have age toning but are mostly in very good condition, the vertical crease being more a bend on the maps than a crease. The size is 10 by 15 inches; some maps are larger and are folded at the right edges to fit. Only a good copy, but very scarce.

The dustwrapper is rubbed at the edges lacks two small pieces, else is in very good condition. It is not price-clipped. With a full page full color dedication on the front blank featuring the animal king. Wolo (Baron Wolff von Falkenstein) was a refugee from Nazi Germany who took up residence in San Francisco where he worked for the Chronicle and developed his superb artistic ability. .

Omaha, NE: National Printing Co., 1904. 8vo (8" x 5.5"), green black-stamped cloth illustrating a Western scene of a wagon trail, with gilt lettering spine and front-cover. 151 pp. First edition of Collins's account of his overland journey and other western adventures. "The author was a post trader at Fort Laramie for 10 years. His book is a most valuable journal of his trip across the plains and adventures among the Indians; hunting, mining, and trading experiences" (Eberstadt). In 1911, following Collins's death, the undistributed copies of the first edition were bound up with his Stories of the Plains and distributed to friends, per his will. REFERENCES: Howes C594; Eberstadt 134: 536. CONDITION: Good, moderate wear to extremities, corners bumped; contents bright and clean. An appealing copy.
