About This Item

Lisbon, Temas e Debates / Círculo de Leitores, 2018.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Large 8°, original illustrated wrappers. As new. 347 pp., footnotes, list of abbreviations. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The preface occupies pp. 9-12. The editors provide an introduction on pp. 13-49, which gives a brief overview of the historical context and the content of each text collected in the volume. They emphasize that the sermons represented in the volume illustrate the way Padre António Vieira argues against the institution of slavery by using examples and arguments from the Bible and notions of human dignity: "Who is it that sustains you in Brazil if not your slaves? They give you your food, so why do you deny them the table that belongs to more than just you, but to you all" (from the Introdução, p. 41 [Sermão XXVII]). The sermons and other texts are selected from the 30-volume complete works of Padre António Vieira, published by Círculo de Leitores (2013-2014). All texts include footnotes with translations of Biblical passages from Latin, additional citations, and explanation of archaisms. ***
