New York & Chicago: Orange Judd Co., 1905. 4to. 8.75 x 11.5 in. [2], 202 pp. With platinum print photo frontisp, from Shreyvogel painting (offset toning to title), numerous tipped-in plates, colour plates, text illustrations, text photos. Publisher’s fringed “Indian smoke tanned buckskin,” cover art of cowboy w/ lariat on front cover, marbled endpapers (minor shelfwear, slight bumping to couple corners, inner front hinge just starting), still VG copy from library of Frederick W. Skiff (1867-1947), noted bibliophile and expert in Americana, w/ his decorative bookplate by William Fowler Hopson on front pastedown, limitation numbered in red on half-title. First edition, No. 277 of 500 copies, of historical western set against the backdrop of events in the Cache la Poudre Valley near Fort Collins, featuring one of the main characters scouting for General Custer in the Dakotas, and the events at the Little Big Horn. Western artists are represented, as well as reproductions of many historic original photographs, including such photographers as Lee Moorehouse, D.F. Barry, and others. Myrick (1860-1927) was president and editor of Phelps Publishing, Good Housekeeping magazines, and Orange Judd Co. He lived for several years in Colorado, and was a passionate collector of artifacts and items related to General Custer. See: Howes, M395, Adams, Herd, 1596.
