C. Taylor. London. 1787. First edition thus. Small thick square 4to. Each section paginated separately. Each of the 80 engraved sepia portrait plates present, sculpted by Taylor, William Nutter, J. Ogborn and W. Birch using illustrations by Samuel Shelly and Robert Smirke, printed onto stipple engraved antique laid paper. Also contains 10 engraved picturesque landscapes bound at rear. 90 plates in all. Handsomely bound in full contemporary tree calf gilt, bds. sl. rubbed, expertly rebacked with original attractively decorated spine laid down, leather lettering piece, marbled e/ps. Armorial bookplate of Jane Houghton, dated 1807. Pages and plates lightly age browned o/w a very clean and sound copy of this work. It is very unusual to find this volume complete, bound from all the original parts. Over half of the known are defective and we are pleased to be able to present this scarce and unusual item.
