The War with Catiline, also known as the Catiline (Latin: De coniuratione Catilinae or Bellum Catilinae) is the first story published by the Roman historian Salustius. It is a chronicle of the attempt to overthrow the Roman rule taken by Catiline in 63 BC, probably written between 44 and 40 BC, 20 years after the events described. The story begins with a short introduction about the nature of man, history, and the short autobiography of Salustius himself. Later, the historian describes Catiline himself and presents his political ambitions. According to Salustius, Catiline is an enemy of law, order, and morality. It is a model of all the behaviors that the writer considers to be disastrous for Rome.

A rare 1702 English printing of 'The Satires' of Juvenal and Persius. This collection of satirical poetry was written in the late 1st and 2nd centuries and discuss society, social norms, irony, each of these providing insight to the morals and values of Roman life at the time. Juvenal outlines many of the concerns he has with Roman citizens including unfaithfulness and greed; issues he recognized as downfalls to society. Many of the satires include references to Greek and Roman mythology.
This particular issue was translated by John Dryden and contains numerous full-page engravings.

London: William Pickering, 1845. Small Octavo. Aldine edition of the British poets. In 6 volumes. Portrait frontispiece in volume one. A collection of Chaucer's poetical works along with a memoir. An exceptionally nice set. Though all the volumes appear to have been rebacked at an early date and beautifully executed. (It would not have been noticeable except; the marbled endpapers did not match the marbled edges). A beautiful set, bound in full polished calf, spines flat, maroon and brown spine labels gilt, gilt ruled compartments decoratively stamped in gilt, all edges marbled, remarkably fresh and bright internally, with a few bumped corners. A lovely set.
