About This Item
New York: Random House. 1936. Later Printing. Hardcover. Near fine copy of the author's first book in very good dust jacket with browning internal mends. Thanks to the publisher's choice of heavy stock for the dust jacket, none of the browning tape mends show up on the outside of the dust jacket. This copy is signed and inscribed by the author. Tipped to the front free endpaper is a typed letter, signed, (April, 1937) to the inscribee on how it would be his pleasure to sign the book for the owner. Milwaukee bookseller Harry Schwartz wrote to many publishers asking questions about first edition points. Laid into this copy is a Typed Letter, signed (November, 1957) from Random House President Bennett Cerf bemoaning the fact that "some s.o.b. had hooked' his copy of the first printing so he wouldn't be able to answer Schwartz's question. The letter is signed in ink, "Bennett". Finally, a folded mimeographed program from a 1937 production of Bury the Dead is also laid in. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 107 pp .
