Description:
Dublin: M. Rhames, 1743. Published 1743. The only book published by this Irish philosopher. The author describes the natural state of the human mind as generally good but ignorant and prone to vice unless it is educated and enlightened to cultivate a sense of religion and love of truth (this in an incredibly simplified synopsis of the author's propositions). Full calf with gilt-lettered red spine label, raised spine bands, [4], 15, [37], 344 pages. Covers edgeworn and joints weak, front cover held by binder's cords, text block sound with no loosened pages, pages clean with some age-toning and a fairly faint dampstain to the lower right hand area through most of the first half of the book, affecting only the lower three lines of text at the most, no chips or tears. . Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

DJ Shows Very Light Shelf Wear (See Photos)
Book is Bright, Tight, Clean, Unread, No Defects.
Synopsis: To Yeats, as well as to Eliot, Pound, Joyce, and other major writers, as Erich Auerbach put it in Mimesis, "Antiquity means liberation and a broadening of horizons, not in any sense a new limitation or servitude." That is why Greco-Roman themes can be endlessly stimulating, why Yeats could call the Greek and Roman writers "the builders of my soul." Brian Arkin's thematic consideration of Yeat's subject matter under philosophy, myth, religion, history, literature, visual art, and Byzantium, allows us to see coherently how Yeats exploited this material and how, especially in his middle and later periods, he transformed and metamorphosed subject matter from Homer, Phidias, Plato, Plotinus, and Sophocles, and from the myths of Dionysus, Helen of Troy, Leda, and Zeus, to exemplify his central preoccupations. Irish Literary Studies Series No. 32.

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1927. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First American Edition, third printing as noted on dust jacket. aka An Outline of Philosophy. The text block is solid, clean and square. Endpapers are clear of markings with NO previous owner's signature. Spine is stiff and appears unread, boards rigid and tips pointed.Just a bit of tanning on the endpapers. It is a beautiful copy! The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has about a one inch loss at the upper right hand corner of the front cover with a though bit of shelf wear and tiny loss here and there on edges and at center cover and spine ends and at tips. The reason this is a third printing is that the dust jacket cover says "Third Printing...15,000." Looks dashing in its shiny new plastic cover. .

Exceptional first edition of Richard Weaver's (1910-1963) seminal work on the decline of the West and the consequences of its movement away from philosophical realism in favor of moral and intellectual relativism. Weaver was an American professor of English and rhetoric at the University of Chicago and a conservative intellectual in the Southern tradition. Weaver earned his degree in English in 1932 from the University of Kentucky and thereafter pursued his master's degree in English at Vanderbilt University, where John Crowe Ransom supervised his thesis, The Revolt Against Humanism-a critique of the humanism of Irving Babbitt and Paul Elmer More. 1681. MOYENS SURS & HONESTES POUR LA CONVERSION DE TOUS LES HERETIQUES, et Avis et Expediens salutaires pour la Reformation de l'Eglise. Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1681. 12mo. Two volumes bound as one. [xl]330[2]249[3]pp. First edition. A thoughtful and lengthy argument that all that is evil in the Church, such as the Inquisition, simony, and clerical misbehaviour, comes from the Papacy and the Cardinals, the solution being to abolish the Papacy, returning the Church to its original and scriptural simplicity. According to the "Avertisement" at the end, the manuscript was unfinished due to the ill-health of the anonymous author, an "homme de qualite et scavant." Pierre Marteau is a fictitious publishing house, never located in Cologne or anywhere else, providing a name under which French, German, and Dutch printers could disseminate controversial or pornographic books from 1660 to the late 18th century. Other Pierre Marteau titles tend to be anticlerical, politically inflammatory or scandalous. (Brunet:…

Description:
1676 Boethius Consolation of Philosophy Medieval Free Will French Regnier"Nothing is miserable unless you think it so; and on the other hand, nothing brings happiness unless you are content with it."
― Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy
A rare edition of "The Consolation of Philosophy" by Boethius, a work that has been described as "the single most important and influential work on Medieval and early Renaissance Christianity and is the last great Western work of the Classical Period." ('Consolation of Philosophy', Oxford 2000, introduction). This work in an imaginary dialogue between Boethius and the personification of philosophy, arguing that there is a higher power. Boethius engages questions such as the nature of predestination and free will, why evil men often prosper, and good men fall into ruin, human nature, virtue, and justice.
This 1676 French edition was collected and edited by Nicolas Regnier.

1660 Capuchin Devotional by Reims True Perfection of Life Spiritual ExercisesJean-François de Reims was a 17th-century Capuchin monk whose theological treatises are relatively unknown today. And while his works are not regularly referenced, they do offer value to the development of spiritual devotion in 17th-century Catholic Europe. "The True Perfection of this Life" is one of Reims best works – a book of spiritual exercises, devotions, and lessons.

Description:
1684 Spanish Louis of Granada Catechism Catholic Council Trent + 1666 MemorialLouis of Granada was a 16th-century Spanish Dominican friar and preacher. Best known for his homilies and devotionals, Granada wrote an important edition of the 1566 Roman Catechism of the Council of Trent. Granada edited and translated the Catechism to make it more understandable for Spanish readers. Years later, the work was translated into French and published throughout the French speaking world.
This 1684 edition was translated by Girard and published in Paris in four volumes. This set features a 1666 printing of Granada's "Additions to Memorial of a Christian Life" – a supplement to his earlier 'Christian Life'. This work was written to instruct on proper and moral living under the Christian church, with devotions and prayers.
