About This Item

London: Secker & Warburg, 1947. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. A smart later edition of this novel inspired by his own family's history, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Later edition, first published in England in 1924. A novel chronicling the decline of a wealthy north German merchant family over the course of four generations, incidentally portraying the manner of life for the Hanseatic bourgeoisie. Written by Paul Thomas Mann, a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light wear to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is sound with wear and light chipping to the extremities. Light loss to the head of the spine with the odd small closed tear. Light sunning to the spine and the odd small mark to the panels. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Buddenbrooks was Thomas Mann's first novel, published in 1901 when he was twenty-six years old. The publication of the 2nd edition in 1903 confirmed that Buddenbrooks was a major literary success in Germany. It portrays the downfall (already announced in the subtitle, Decline of a family) of a wealthy mercantile family of Lübeck over four generations. The book is generally understood as a portrait of the German bourgeois society throughout several decades of the 19th century.
