On the front fly, aunt Lucille Ingram has neatly inscribed in red ink: "Given to Lucille Ingram by Truman Capote". She has also signed the back endpapers twice. Near fine in a very good dustwrapper with some old tap e remains visible. [old tape removed]. A very special copy of one of Capote's highlights. Of All of the cousins Truman lived with as a child, Lucille Faulk Ingram & her daughter were his closest kin. As a fledgling writer looking for solitude, it was in the comfort of Lucille Ingram's home that Truman began to write his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms.

This copy has great provenance - being Bill Katz's copy, with facsimiles of two pre-publication letters from publisher John Martin to Katz (from December 1970 and January 1971), discussing Katz's prior pivotal review of 'The Days Run Away...' in Library Journal, which Martin credited for making the sale of the book, and discussing sending proofs of 'Post Office' to Katz, hoping for another Library Journal review. Katz in fact did write the review, the results of which Bukowski credited with helping him to become a full-time writer. Publisher's half morocco, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble. ********Copies in the original half morocco binding with the "curved fly" illustration are the rarest of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Less than two weeks before publication, the publisher Webster announced that he was binding 20,000 copies in cloth, another 2,500 in sheep, and 500 copies in half morocco. This copy was printed in 1884, before the "curved fly" page was replaced.

First American Edition of the "Authorized Translation" by Nathan Haskell Dole, in the four-volume "Deluxe Binding": paper spine labels a bit rubbed, small previous owner's name on front end papers of each volume. A very good, clean, tight set. Scarce in any condition, but exceptionally so in this nice condition.
This translation is much more common in the four-volumes-bound-as-two format, which continued to be sold as late as 1900, as there are copies with tipped in leaves listing The Resurrection among the Tolstoy titles available. The first appearance of War And Peace in English--published by Vizetelly in England, and in a revised edition by Gottsberger in the US, both in 1886--was actually an abridged translation of a French translation of the Russian original. This is the first edition in English translated directly from the original Russian.
