About This Item

Barrie & Jenkins Ltd, 1980 Book. Good. Hardcover. English text; Hardcover (with dustjacket); 451 pages with black and white and some colour illustrations; 19.8 x 25.5 cm; 1.389 Kg; Dust jacket wrapped in a permanent adhesive cover. Some wear marks on the dust jacket, namely yellow marks on the spine. Signed and inscribed by the author to a previous owner on front free endpaper; The interior is in very good condition.; Those who have read Geoffrey Godden's popular one-volume Illustrated Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain will welcome this new book to extend and enrich their appreciation of British ceramics. The detailed text, arranged alphabetic by factories, is sumptuously illustrated with nearly 600 plates in colour and black and white. The author is justifiably famous for his original discoveries in the history of porcelain and in this illustrated guide yet more recent has enabled the author to identify many previously undocumented pieces, especially of the 1800-1840 period. In addition, the widened scope of the book includes products of the major porcelain manufacturers from the 1740s to the present day. Products of the lesser-known factories are also discussed and illustrated, together with typical examples of the more famous porcelain producers. Over forty factories are dealt with, with a short history of each firm and details of the major artists employed and the influence of their styles on the work of others. Much help is offered to the collector - the characteristic shapes of the different porcelains and the range of pattern-numbers are given in each case, with illustrations of manufacturers' symbols and registrations marks. Detailed captions support the main text, with a guide to the distinguishing features of each example. References to specialist works are given in each section and there is an extensive bibliography to aid further study..
