Born at Rochdale in Lancashire, England Anne Hartley Gilbert (1821-1904) studied ballet under Paul Taglioni at Her Majesty's Theatre in the Haymarket. She moved to America after marrying the actor George H. Gilbert and performed in Chicago, Cleveland and Cincinnati before achieving success on Broadway.
