Hofland's manual remains one the most lucid and practical works to come from the mid-19th century. He writes in a friendly, relaxed style and is quite readable today. The book is bound in contemporary one half brown calf with gilt titles over a red morocco lettering piece on the spine with raised hubs with gilt rules; marbled boards. With the armorial bookplate of John H. B. Manly on the front pastedown. Rubbing to the boards, light edge wear, a little scattered foxing in the text, otherwise very good..

Blindstamped boards faded and soiled with gilt quite dulled on front cover and spine. Spine ends worn and starting to fray, boards gently warped and some nibbling to bottom page edges.  Internally, a small bookplate to inside front board, otherwise pages clean and bright.  Engravings, with tissue guards, in very good condition. The binding is tight but front hinge is starting.
